The Team with Experience

Philip Young - Rally Manager, who competed on 12 international rallies including several long-distance events such as the ’77 London to Sydney, six Himalayan Rallies and the Paris Dakar, instigator and co-founder of the Historic Rally Car Register; founder of the Classic Rally Association, served on various committees of the MSA – Britain’s governing body – for six years; organised the first international rally for historic cars to receive a permit from the FIA, the Pirelli Classic Marathon; initiated the first historic Monte-Carlo retrospective for classic cars, the Monte Carlo Challenge; Organised the first re-enactment of the Peking to Paris in 1997 and the first-ever timed lap of the globe with the Around the World in 80 Days to make the Millennium three years later, including the London to Peking section. Organised some 50 major events.

Kim Bannister - Clerk of the Course from China to Moscow, has undertaken the full route survey and spent many weeks travelling the whole route through China, Mongolia, Russia and Europe. Since starting on the project over two years ago Kim has covered many thousands of kilometres seeking out the most suitable tracks through China, across the Gobi Desert, Inner and Outer Mongolia and through the Russian Steppes to Moscow. Kim has worked on several other long distance events including the Classic Safari Motor Challenge across southern Africa, and our London to Dakar World Cup Rally. Kim is also acting as on-event Rally Secretary. There is no one with a greater knowledge of the challenge ahead than Kim Bannister.

Martin Clark – Clerk of the Course from Moscow to Paris, has more experience of taking charge of the sporting aspects of long-distance events than just about anyone else – he was in charge of the 1997 Peking to Paris, last year’s Cape Town to Mombassa Classic Safari, and recent World Cup Rallies. A former competitor, he heads up the on-event team from Moscow onwards and when it comes to on-event decision making Martin is one of the world’s most experienced long distance motorsport officials.
.

Heidi Winterbourne and Barbara Bradshaw: Call the Rally Office and one of them will answer. Both have been involved in rally administration for several years, and appreciate the concerns of competitors – if they can’t find you an answer, they’ll know someone who can. The professionally serviced Rally Office is open during normal office hours.

Tony Fowkes and Andy Inskip: Get stuck, fall off the road, or reckon you are done for? Tony and Andy will always think otherwise. The ex-Camel Trophy Land Rover Discovery is stuffed with rescue equipment. Tony is a former long-distance rally driver with Mercedes, and drove alongside Timo Makinen and Andrew Cowan on such events as the London to Sydney of 1977 (finishing second, having led for much of the way), and the Safari Rally. Don’t ever whisper giving up in their company!

Peter and Betty Banham: Competed on the Himalayan Rally in the Unipart Team with Philip Young and has taken part in numerous events including the Safari Rally – past experience as a clubmen on long events serves you well, nobody understands your problems quite like The Banhams, and enormously experienced in getting you going from the remotest of places – best achievement? Getting a car with a piston poking out the side of a block to run again, get back in the event, and finish on three cylinders second overall.

Chris Bruce: Ace route-finder and route-book designer, Chris helps with numerous aspects of the organisation and provides the running results-service.... news of each competitor and results are posted up on the Peking-Paris website every night using his “Kate Adie” satellite-dish, and every single night, however remote the terrain, he always managed to find a signal and get the latest update through....a newsletter by Syd Stelvio saw more than a million hits as the classic-car movement followed the progress of the event. Chris is a former driver on several long distance events, including the ’77 London to Sydney and several in Africa.

Mick O’Malley: Runs check-points and time-controls, but happiest when left on his own in some wild spot....enormously well-travelled, Mick used to be a group-leader with a leading overland travel company, and is currently working in Mongolia helping to decide the best roads and the right blend of adventure for 2007.... worked with us on our ’97 Peking to Paris, the 2000 Around the World, and the Cape Town to Mombassa Classic Safari.
